The Challenge

As a law firm, our client has a responsibility to carry out Conflict of Interest searches to ensure that they do not accept instructions to act for a client where there is a conflict of interest or a significant risk of a conflict of interest. With knowledge about conflict hidden inside unstructured documents the possibility of missing a vital piece of information was significant and difficult to manage. Our client needed to significantly improve the speed and accuracy of their conflict of interest searches.

The Solution

Through integration of Pathway Search into CIVICA’s Galaxy case management system, Pathway and CIVICA provided our client with the solution. Pathway automatically indexes every key word inside every document source, matching client names, companies, expert witnesses, conditions, precedents, legal terms, non-standard terms and so on. This ensures that no vital piece of information is missed, and conflicts of interest are avoided.

Indexed information can then be searched upon. Speed of search is lightning fast, with matching documents identified quickly and easily through a web browser interface. No change in process or behaviour was required by our client to save documents in a particular location or to add/alter keywords or documents.

Pathway Search automatically creates an intelligent and meaningful summary on the content of every document, providing our client with a synopsis without ever needing to read or open the document. This enabled them to able to judge the relevance of a document in seconds.

The law firm was impressed with the ease of implementation. It required no change to existing practices and it quickly indexed and summarised all documents ‘in situ’. They started to see the benefits of the solution immediately.
